Strange that I got an outdated version. When I was downloading it I was trying to discern whether it was outdated. For some reason I didn't think such an old driver would be available just assumed it was the most up to date one. So now I just need to find where the most up to date driver is. And where Diamond's site is at. I was never terribly impressed with the Diamond drivers for my MX300.
Try the Aureal Vortex 2 2048 reference drivers from. I had good results with those under 98SE. 'Nothing changes in Device Manager'? Do you mean the sound card has a yellow exclamation mark, or that it's just not there at all? Brett Weir is probably right about conflict, but I'd check your IRQ, DMA and memory usage for conflict first before going to the trouble of moving the card to a different slot. Second thought: Are you replacing an older soundcard with the MX300?
Driver residues in 98 can really screw up installation of new soundcards. Try a fresh install of 98 if you can face it. I'm going to download the Vortex Drivers now. Thank you for giving me an alternative driver!
Mx300 Software
I was wondering if there were other drivers I might try. Hopefully it will fix the problem. As for the 'no change in device manager' - I mean that it doesn't show up at all. And another strange thing is, when I try to install the card using insall wizard and point to the drivers via 'Have Disk' it says the driver was not specifically written for the device.
Stranger yet is I've had this card for awhile. It worked fine in my Celeron 300a system with the same drivers. I did get it to work on my current system, but then the HD crashed. Now on the new drive it isn't working. I sorta have a feeling I'm just not doing something right. Like the installation is picky and wants things to happen in a certain order or something. Oh yea, another thing.
After I installed the driver software, a 'found new hardware' window pops up saying 'unknown sound device' or something to that effect, instead of recognizing the hardware and installing the driver software. While I'm here, I have a non-related question: I have cookies enabled, yet online forums like this one do not remember my username and password, even though I tell it to 'remember me'. Thank you guys for the help thus far. I wish I had started using Ars ages ago!
